Common Fault Diagnosis Methods for Single-Phase Motors


The power supply wiring is open-circuited (the motor makes no sound at all). Measure across the terminal ends—there should be no voltage.

The power supply voltage is normal, but the motor fails to start after being powered on.

1) The power supply wiring is open (the motor makes no sound at all). Measure across the wiring terminals—there should be no voltage.

2) The primary or secondary winding is open-circuited. You can determine whether an open circuit exists by measuring the DC resistance.

3) The centrifugal switch contacts are not closed, preventing the auxiliary winding from receiving power and functioning. To determine this issue, you can either disconnect the connection point between the main and auxiliary windings and then measure the DC resistance, or use the method described in Part Two.

4) The starting capacitor wiring is open-circuited or has an internal break. Use the same troubleshooting method as described in item 3 above.

5) For shaded-pole motors, the shading coil (short-circuit ring) may be open-circuited or detached. If the short-circuit ring is externally visible, it can usually be identified simply by inspection; otherwise, you can use the method described in Part 2 to confirm.

6) For series-wound motors, the brushes may not make contact with the commutator due to missing brushes, excessively short brushes, brush jamming, or other issues; alternatively, the brush leads might be disconnected, or there could be an open circuit within either the armature winding or the field winding.
